1.From Bucharest: Full-Day Trip to Bulgaria

★★★★★★★★★★4.6 · 1,008 reviews · 12 hours · from $93Our pick

Cross from Bucharest into Bulgaria for a full day of medieval sights, mountain views, and local culture. Visit Tsarevets Fortress, walk through Veliko Tarnovo, stop in Arbanasi, and see either Holy Trinity Cathedral in Ruse or St. Basarabov Monastery. English-speaking guides such as Narcis, Lucian, and Elena lead the small-group tour.

“We had several tour guides during our month in Romania, some good, some awful. However our guide on the mini-bus to Bulgaria, called Narcis, was an absolute 10-star gentleman. He was so knowledgeable, so inclusive and so helpful in every way that it was an absolute joy to be in his company. As I exited the bus in Bucharest he did something that totally surprised me. I wanted to show my appreciation for a wonderful job with a tip but he refused point blank to take it, saying he was 'paid to do the job'. What a contrast to other guides who asked for a tip. Multumesc mult Narcis!!”

Expect more than four hours in Plovdiv, about an hour at the monastery, and several hours on mountain roads.

“A wonderful day trip from Sofia to see the Rila Monastery and the City of Plovdiv. We were very fortunate (or not. It depends on how you look at it) to be greeted by a blanket of snow at the Rila Monastery. It was magical. And the only people there was our very small tour group of 9. Sadly due to the snow the bakery/restaurants had a power cut so we didn’t get to experience any of the Bulgarian breakfast treats. Plovdiv was a very relaxed, and easy city to get lost in for a a few hours. Philip was an excellent guide who gave us just the right amount…”
